She heard him when he pulled in an hour later. It was hard not to. Especially since she’d been waiting for him to return. The desk in her bedroom faced the side where Guy parked his car. With the window open, it seemed rude not to say anything when he passed.
She was making excuses to herself. What was worse, she knew it.
He saw her sitting there and wondered if she was waiting for him. The answer was probably no, but he liked to think that there was a chance that she might be.
Nancy looked up, as if surprised to see him approach. She pushed the curtain back farther, away from the window. “So, how did it go?”
He’d been a hit. So much so that the acting principal had asked him to address a special assembly. Guy had delivered an impromptu talk. Addie and A.J. had sat right up front, beaming and feeling very pleased with themselves.
“Pretty well, I think.” He played it down. “I’m beginning to have new respect for Bob and Gary.”
She cocked her head. “Bob and Gary?”
“The two officers who make the rounds on the elementary school circuit. They hold assemblies, interact with the kids, answer any questions,” he explained. “It’s the police department’s way of making friends with kids while they’re still young. Hopefully, we discourage any behavioral problems before they occur.”
He leaned a shoulder against the wall, wishing he had the time to get himself invited in.
“They tell kids to avoid gangs, and how bad drugs are for them. The usual. In a place like Bedford, it’s not too hard.” He smiled at his own naiveté. “Or so I thought. But boy, they can sure be a handful.”
She liked the fact that it didn’t threaten his masculinity to admit to being overwhelmed. “Do I detect a little droop in those wings?”
He wasn’t following her. “Wings?”
She nodded. “Well, the way you were putting up with the twins, I was beginning to think you had the patience of a saint, or an angel.”
He laughed. Now there was a image. “Talk to Demi about that.” He straightened. “Well, I’d better get going. I just stopped to get some papers. I’m due at the precinct in fifteen minutes. I only signed out for half a day.”
“You used your own time off to do this?”
